There is no right way to run a writer's group. I am a member of three very different creative consortiums and each one fills a different need.
However, over the years, we have learned some basics of meeting management that can help everyone be more successful. You see, like a glass and steel skyscraper, the strength of any building is in it's foundation. If the framework is sound, then the details can shine.
The building blocks of a productive MasterMind Writing Group include:
Piers (or peers): Start with a core group of dedicated fellow writers, Ideally, some will be more experienced and some less seasoned. This makes for a nice mix of energy, resources, mentoring and education. As long as everyone shares the goal of reaching for the publishing stars, then you will all benefit from the diverse grounding.
Support: Like the New York city skyline, the impact comes from the critical mass of proud buildings shining in the night. Each member benefits from the glow of success thrown by fellow writers as all bask in the advancement of the group. Make time for sharing and celebrating success. It is inspiring and uplifting.
Code: While this is a creative group, members must still be held accountable to progress and process. One of the most powerful aspects of a MasterMind Group is the peer pressure to set goals and then report back on progress at the next meeting. Procrastination loses its appeal when you know you will have to put down your glass and admit you didn't finish your query or your chapter. Process is also essential as following a set routine at a meeting allows each person time to report, ask for advice and set new goals.
What are your secrets for a strong writing group foundation? How do your structure your meetings, share your successes and reach for the sky?
Yours in Writing,
