On Living Vicariously Through Your Fellow Writers

Every week I write about the joys of having a writer's network that prods, supports and educates me. Today, I want to show you the best reason for sharing the writing journey - parties.

Over the weekend, each member of our writing group received the following email from Dawn Lairamore, a very talented writer who will soon be a household name:

"Some of you know this has been brewing for a little while, so today I’m pleased to be able to announce that Holiday House Inc., an independent publisher of children’s books in New York City, has formally acquired the rights to my first novel, Emma & Elridge, which they tentatively hope to release as part of their Fall 2010 or Spring 2011 book list."

"I can’t thank you ladies enough for all your support over the past year.  I hope you’ll wish me luck as E&E heads into editorial (a thought that makes my heart pound every time I think of it), and, of course, I’ll send out more news as it becomes available."

This was tantamount to a birth announcement directed toward the midwives who have been holding her hand as the pregnancy progressed. We couldn't be prouder.

What we weren't was surprised. Dawn can write! And the story is amazing. Check out the synopsis from the book proposal:

"The kingdom of Ardendale has always locked its princesses in a white tower guarded by a dragon.  It’s the only way to lure gallant young princes to the tiny, out-of-the-way kingdom to marry them.  But Emma is a princess who doesn’t care to be rescued, and Elridge a dragon afraid of being slain.  Neither wants anything to do with Romil, a scheming prince from the frozen north who has his own less-than-romantic reasons for wanting Emma’s hand in marriage.  Never mind that humans and dragons have loathed each other for centuries, it isn’t long before this feisty princess and rather undragonly dragon have fled the tower and set off on a perilous journey to find Emma’s long-lost fairy godmother, the only one who might help them escape the not-so-fairy-tale fates that await them.  Full of humor and high adventure—and plenty of refurbished fairy tale motifs—Emma & Elridge is a twist on the typical princess-needs-rescuing-from-a-dragon storyline so common in traditional tales, featuring a princess and a dragon who actually team up to thwart the handsome prince."

How cool is that? I know the first comment is going to be where can I order advance copies. I'll let you know as soon as I find out. In the meantime, let's all celebrate the success of this very talented woman. She is an inspiration to us all.

Now it is your turn to conquer the world and share your milestones with us at MasterMind Writers.
