Building a Platform

Last week was devoted to co-mingling - getting out there and mixing it up for inspiration, business and fun. One of the highlights of my week was a workshop performed by an inspirational woman in my Writer's MasterMind Group, Dena Kouremetis

Dena is writing a book tentatively titled "A Smart Woman's Guide to Romance in Midlife".  She is out building her platform while she researches and writes the book.  Now that is smart.

The event was information-packed, fun and filled with vibrant women aided in part by her connections in our writer's group. One fellow member spoke and pitched her own book to the group. She also made the connection at the swanky spa where we relaxed while talking about respecting our inner and outer happiness.

In addition to the workshops (another one is planned for Aug 21 if you are interested in attending a Heartfelt Transitions Ladies Night Out), she also writes a Lady Boomer column for the Examiner, speaks about citizen journalism and networks with the powerful local chapter of eWomen Network

As you delve into your topic, researching, writing and obsessing over your book, set aside some time to think about how you will market, sell and leverage the finished product to launch a career that could pay more and be even more satisfying than you had originally intended. Your agent will be glad you did. Plus, you may end up with a better product if you are getting feedback early in the process. And when the ink has finally dried, you will have a developed audience eagerly anticipating and ready to buy your finished product.

What can you do to build a platform even before you book is complete?
1. Network in the field in person and online
2. Give classes, workshops, talks on the topic
3. Seek out others in the field and establish a mutually beneficial relationship by guest blogging, speaking with them or trading book blurbs

How do you build your platform?

Yours in Writing,
