Leveraging Resources of All Sizes

When is a group more than the sum of its parts? When it is a MasterMind Writing Group. As we discuss in Writer's Secret: MasterMind Your Way to Publishing Success, a group of writers focused on helping everyone get published brings a bevy of contacts, best practices and skills to a discussion. Your fellow members can put you in touch with agents, editors and research treasure troves. They can also act as co-writers, guest bloggers and reviewers. The more each member gives, the more each writer gains valuable experience.

In that spirit, as Jennifer and I set off on our Spring Break adventure along the coast of California, we are tapping a vital resource from our primary MasterMind Group, our children. In true Bill Keane Family Circus style, we will have our 14-year-old sons, Joe and Julian, post this week's writing prompts from their observations of slug bugs, college campuses and beastly waves.

This is your chance to write a scene in the voice of today's youth, tomorrow's book-reading audience. What are they really thinking when they type: Hay, wuzup dude? Who are they talking to and what response are they hoping to hear when the attached digital device beep beeps a minute later? Think of it as your chance to glimpse all the energy of a pubescent boy without the smell.

In the meantime, we hope spring has awakened the productive writer in you and we will soon see all kinds of updates about contracts signed, book release parties scheduled and sequels in the works. Our own Laura-Lynne Powell is celebrating the release of her story in the anthology My Mom is My Hero, which is out just in time for Mother's Day. Any MasterWriters in the Sacramento Area, please come support her Mothers' Night Out on April 9 at 7:00 at Fire Cafe. Please share your successes. You inspire us everyday. Lol.
