Write with a Purpose

Why do you write?

One of the best ways to motivate yourself to take any action is to clearly define the benefits of doing or not doing something. Want to fit into that bikini for your big vacation? The image of sitting on a beach just might be enough incentive to make you put down the danish. Having a dinner party? Anticipating the lively conversation should propel you to clear off all those magazines sitting on the table.

The same is true with writing. Why are you writing? Do you have something you need to share with the world? Are you trying to earn enough money to pay the rent? Those are powerful reasons. Clearly define what you hope to achieve. Are you writing because you want to be an author? Take that one step further. Why do you want to be a published author?

One popular reason is for career advancement. Being able to say you have published a book on x gives you the immediate perception of being an expert on that topic and can lead to speaking engagements, more writing assignments and, in some cases, promotions. Heck, your kids may even be impressed and take the garbage out without being asked. We can dream can't we?

Your assignment for today is to write down exactly why you write. What benefits do you hope to enjoy when you have reached your goal? How will your life be better? Share your goals with your MasterMind Group (don't have one, learn how to start and run one using the Writer's Secret). Post that goal where you can clearly see it from your chair and then sit down for a power writing session. Did the words flow a little faster? Were you less distracted by the Facebook and Twitter icons?

Now share your goals and the results with us below in the comments section so everyone can be inspired.
